“They say that we should love ourselves first before other people learn to love us. But it’s not as easy as it seems. Sometimes, we need someone to accept us and love us first. Then, we would learn to see ourselves through that person’s eyes and learn to love ourselves.”
Souma Yuki (Fruits Basket)
A lot of times in our lives we hear that ‘if you can’t love yourself, you can’t expect others to love you.’ However, I disagree with this line of thinking. It isn’t easy to love oneself; nor is it easy to understand what others see in us.
The quote above expresses my feelings on the topic of loving oneself. Sometimes, it is impossible to learn to love oneself until we’ve learned why others love us. It isn’t easy to understand why this is or isn’t; and it varies from person to person. Some believe it is important to love oneself before being able to be loved. To me, this is because we will not be able to understand when we are getting pushed around if we don’t love ourselves. Some people don’t realize their worth until they learn to love themselves. They will put up with abuse because they have no love for themselves and do not believe they deserve better.
Even so, we cannot always learn to love ourselves so easily. Sometimes, if we look through the right person’s eyes, we will be able to see all the good things about ourselves and why we are loved. In turn, we can learn to look past our flaws, because someone else loves them.
I know this post is really short and sappy but I believe it is important to remind everyone that you do not have to love yourself to be loved. You deserve better than you may think you do and you will eventually find someone, be it friend or romantic interest, who teaches you to love yourself for who you are.
